Ali 'Imran 3:131

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

“And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Put something between yourselves and the Fire that has already been made ready for those who reject Him.

A reflection

A shield you can build out of half a date

In a launderette on a wet Tuesday a woman was counting coins out of her palm and coming up short. The man waiting by the dryers put a pound in her machine, said nothing about it, and went back to his phone. He was not a generous man by temperament. He had done something very small and slightly awkward.

That is almost exactly the size the Prophet gave this instruction. Sahih al-Bukhari records him mentioning the Fire, turning his face away as though he were looking at it, and saying it three times. Then: shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. And in another narration he added that if you cannot find that, then with a good word.

Half a date. Not a fortune, not a fast, not a pilgrimage. Something you would be embarrassed to call charity.

That makes sense once you look at the verb. Two translations here say fear the Fire and one says guard yourselves against the Fire. The root behind it has one picture, and it is not an emotion. A wiqāya is whatever you put between a thing and the harm coming at it. A saddle was called wāq when it did not rub the camel's back raw. A horse with a sore hoof treads carefully on hard ground, guarding the foot. The lexicons gloss the command as putting something between you and what you fear, like a shield. Those are established senses.

Two concise commentaries say exactly that about this ayah: make a shield between yourselves and the Fire, by doing good and leaving what is forbidden.

So the instruction is not that you should feel more afraid this evening. Feelings are not load-bearing. It is that you should put something there today, however small. A shield is made of pieces, and He has said that half a date counts.

He gains nothing from the pound in the machine. He is free of all need (35:15). The shield is yours.
