Ali 'Imran 3:136

“Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Their payment is being covered by their Lord, and gardens with rivers running beneath them, and the wage itself is what the verse praises.

A reflection

The verse praises the wage, not the worker

A woman won a national prize for twenty years of work. The announcement ran to four paragraphs, three of them about the history of the prize and the people who had founded it. Her name was in the last line. She noticed that she minded, and then she noticed, more slowly, that she had minded about the wrong thing.

Read the end of this ayah carefully, because it does exactly that. After the forgiveness, the gardens and the rivers, the sentence closes: and excellent is the wage of the workers. The praise lands on the wage. The workers are mentioned only to say whose wage it is. Nobody in the sentence is told that they were excellent.

This is not a slight. It is an accurate invoice. The word for wage keeps a picture the first hearers knew. The root has two branches that meet: a worker's pay, and a broken bone knitting back together. One lexicon joins them. A wage is what restores a worker after the strain of his labour, as a setting restores a broken bone. So the wage is not a bonus on top of a good day. It is what makes whole the one who spent himself.

Now put the two halves side by side honestly. Forgiveness, gardens, rivers, staying. Against: spending something, holding a temper, letting somebody off, and coming back after a sin. Even the most self-satisfied accountant could not call that a fair trade.

Which is where pride quietly dies. Our own sentences end the other way round. We describe the project and finish on who ran it. We describe the charity and finish on who gave. The ego is not usually after money; it is after the last clause.

And He has no need of any of it. He says plainly that He is free of all need (35:15). He is not buying your labour because He requires the output.

So say the sentence the way the ayah says it, next time you have done something you are pleased with. Name the payment. Then stop talking.
