Ali 'Imran 3:155
“Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] - it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allāh has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Those who turned back were made to slip by Satan, on a foothold their own record had given him, and Allah has already pardoned them.
A reflection
The second name is the one that stops you
A man tells himself he is patient with his brother-in-law. Nine years of swallowed remarks, and he has filed every one of them under forbearance. Then one evening the room goes quiet, he has the floor, the audience and the perfect sentence, and he uses it. In four seconds he finds out what the nine years actually were. Not patience. No opportunity.
Two names close this verse, and the pairing is not the usual one. Not Forgiving and Merciful. Forgiving and Ḥalīm.
The lexicons make ḥilm precise and physical. One defines it as restraining oneself and one's nature from the surge of anger. Another distinguishes it carefully from mere delay: every ḥilm is a respite, but not every respite is ḥilm. That is established. Waiting because you cannot act yet is not forbearance. Forbearance is holding a hand that is perfectly able to fall.
So the verse is not saying Allah let it pass. It is saying He held it back, at full power, deliberately, over men who had just left His Messenger surrounded on a hillside.
This is where our self-image gets taken apart. Most of what we call our patience is a shortage of means. We are mild with the people we cannot reach and sharp with the ones who cannot answer back. Then we report the first and forget the second. Pride lives on that accounting. Nothing exposes it like an afternoon when you suddenly have the power you were never going to misuse.
And why does He name Himself at all? Not because He needs the title. A name is a handle. A man who has just run from a battlefield has to be able to raise his hands tonight. These two words are the entire reason he can. One tells him the fault can be covered. The other tells him the hand above him is being held back on purpose.
