Ali 'Imran 3:158

وَلَئِن مُّتُّمْ أَوْ قُتِلْتُمْ لَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

“And whether you die or are killed, unto Allāh you will be gathered.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Whether you die or are killed, the gathering is to Allah, and nobody has ever been left out of it.

A reflection

A drought year that empties the desert

A man spends forty years arranging never to be anywhere he did not choose. He drives himself to everything, refuses lifts, sits near the door, leaves by his own clock. At eighty-two he is carried into a room by two people he did not pick, at a time nobody consulted him about. That is the first morning of the rest of his life.

Tuḥsharūn is passive. You will be gathered. And the root is not a gentle one.

The Arabs said a hard year ḥasharat a tribe. Drought gathered them out of the open desert and drove them into the towns, and it destroyed their camels. A poet said of such a year that no wild beast and no man escaped its ḥashr. The word covers mustering men for a campaign, and it covers people driven out of their homeland. The first hearers of wa idhā al-wuḥūshu ḥushirat (81:5) knew the picture exactly. The wild animals, which scatter the moment a human appears, rounded up with nowhere left to run. All of that is established in the lexicons.

So this is gathering that drives. Not an invitation.

And the thing it takes apart is a pride almost nobody confesses, because we do not file it under pride. We call it independence. The modern self is organised around choosing: where to be, when to leave, whose company to keep, which invitations to accept. That is the dignity we defend hardest and lose last.

Then look at the one word that changes the whole temperature. Ilā llāh. To Allah. Not to a courtroom. Not to a place. The destination is a Person, and He is the One who made you. This same passage has twice just said that He pardoned men who ran from a battlefield. The driving is real. The One you are driven to is the One who has been covering for you all along.
