Ali 'Imran 3:167

“And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allāh or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] battle, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allāh is most knowing of what they conceal -”

Essence

Asked to fight or at least defend, they said they saw no battle coming, speaking what was not in their hearts.

A reflection

From the pavement every house looks the same

Walk down a terraced street on a cold night and every house looks identical. Point a thermal camera at it and one of them is pouring heat out of the roof. Nothing on the outside said so.

The ayah ends on a word for hiding, and the lexicons give it a surprisingly dignified set of pictures.

A she-camel was katūm when she did not groan as her rider mounted, from strength and endurance. A cloud was muktatam when it held no thunder. A leather seam was katīm when it let no water seep, and a bow was katūm when it gave no twang. That is established.

So the word is not sly. It is sealed. A seam you cannot find by looking at it.

And that is precisely the claim being made. Allah knows better what they conceal. Not what they let slip. Not the inconsistency somebody noticed. The sealed part, the one with no thunder and no leak, that no neighbour, spouse or imam has ever had access to.

Here is what this costs the ego, and it is specific.

Almost nobody's pride lives in their visible record. It lives in the gap between the visible record and the inside, because the gap is the one place we are fully in charge. You can be openly ordinary and privately superior. You can be publicly generous and privately keeping score. You can say the right thing in a room while running a quiet commentary about everyone in it. That commentary feels like the real you precisely because nobody hears it.

This ayah says it is heard, in full, with better resolution than you have on yourself.

So does He announce His knowledge because He needs the acknowledgement? Look at the comparative. He knows better. Better than whom? Than them, about themselves. These were men who had told themselves a story about their own reasons and half believed it. The sentence is not a boast aimed at them. It is a correction of a self-assessment, offered while they were still alive to use it.

And there is mercy folded into it. Most people would rather be exposed to Him than to a crowd, because a crowd gossips and He forgives.

So tonight, say out loud, to Him, one thing you have never said to anyone about your own motives. Not as a confession performance. As an acknowledgement that the sealed seam was never sealed, and that this is better news than the alternative.
