Ali 'Imran 3:175

“That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Fear is Satan's loudest weapon and his only one: name the source, then move your whole dread onto the One who guarantees you.

A reflection

The only fear you run towards

Stand near the rope outside a city club at midnight and watch what fear actually looks like in us. A man with a clipboard holds the list. People rearrange their faces for him. They laugh a shade too loudly, drop a name, check whether anyone saw them checking. Nobody on that pavement is in danger. Yet the whole street is organised around what one stranger thinks of them.

That is the fear most of us live under, and it is almost never about safety. It is about standing. Will I look small. Will they talk. Pride is the engine of it, and pride is the most easily frightened thing a person owns.

Into a week of war rumours, with a real army on the road, comes a command that sounds out of scale: wa-khāfūni. Fear Me. Not Me as well. Me instead.

Someone may hear that and tighten. Does the Most High need a trembling audience. Look at what the demand costs Him: nothing. He is not short of worshippers, and nothing you withhold dents His kingdom. The sources are blunt about which way the benefit runs. The fear is laid on you because you are the one it rescues.

Then there is the scale. Jami' al-Tirmidhi preserves a report from Abu Dharr, graded ḥasan gharīb by its own compiler. The Prophet ﷺ said he saw what they did not see and heard what they did not hear. The sky creaked, and it had every right to creak. There is not a space of four fingers in it without an angel with his forehead on the ground.

Hold the two pictures together. A pavement of grown adults arranging their faces for a clipboard. A sky groaning under the weight of prostration. Our arrogance is not even impressive arrogance. It is vanity, nervous about a guest list.

Khāfūni is not a cage closing on you. It is the moment the clipboard loses its authority.
