Ali 'Imran 3:179
“Allāh would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allāh reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allāh chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allāh and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.”

Essence
He will not hand you the unseen, and He will not leave you mixed up together either: hard days sort what words never could.
A reflection
He will not put you on the ridge
A woman watches her son's flight on a live tracker. Somewhere over the ocean the little aeroplane stops moving and the signal is gone for forty minutes. She knows, intellectually, that the gap is normal. She also cannot put the phone down. By the end of it she has read more into an empty patch of map than into anything else all year.
That is the appetite the ayah addresses. Allah would not inform you of the unseen. The verb is from a root that means climbing to high ground and looking over. A scout sent ahead is a ṭalīʿa; to iṭṭaliʿa is to climb and look down into a thing. So the picture is exact. He will not set you up on the ridge and let you look down into what is screened off.
And ghayb does not mean the non-existent. The Arabs said ghābat al-shams, the sun has set, hidden but not gone. A hollow in the ground that swallowed a traveller was a ghayb. The dark bottom of a well was its ghayāba. Hidden is not absent. It is simply not yours.
Then the exception, and notice how it is phrased. But Allah chooses from His messengers whom He wills. Not: some rise far enough to see. Chosen, and told. One reading warns the reader plainly against imagining that even the Prophet ﷺ was reading hearts the way Allah reads them. He knew because he was informed.
This is where our pride is quietly disarmed, because the hunger to know is almost never humble. We want the diagnosis, the other person's real opinion, the five-year outcome, and we want it so we can stop depending. Sahih al-Bukhari records the day the Prophet ﷺ said: ask me what you wish. A man stood and asked who his father was. He was told. A second man stood and asked, and was told something he will not have wanted to hear in public. Then ʿUmar fell to his knees and said: we are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, with Muhammad as Prophet. And the asking stopped.
That is the humbler posture, and it is a relief rather than a loss. The ridge is not yours. The One on it is not absent, and He is not indifferent, and you can speak to Him about the forty minutes.
