Ali 'Imran 3:186

“You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allāh much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allāh - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of resolve.”

Essence

The promised trial is in what you already hold and in what you will hear, and holding steady with mindfulness is the resolute road.

A reflection

The trial is what you will hear

One sentence was said at a meeting, lightly, by somebody who will not remember it. At one in the morning he is in the kitchen. At two he is back. At twenty to four he is standing at the window with a cold cup in his hand, composing a reply nobody will ever hear. Nothing has happened to him. He cannot settle.

The word for what is promised here is adhā, and the lexicons describe exactly that state. One defines the root as a thing you dislike and cannot settle with. A camel was called adhin when it would not stay in one place although it had no pain anywhere. It was as if its place hurt it. Another defines adhā as harm reaching a living being in its self, its body or its circumstances. That is established in the dictionaries.

So it is harm with no wound. Which is the form the ayah picks out.

Stop and notice how strange the choice is. This comes near the end of a long passage about a battle: seventy dead, the wounded going out again, a defeat being argued over. And when Allah tells the believers what they will certainly undergo, after wealth and selves, the thing He names is what they will hear. Insults, mockery, attacks on the religion, and the commentaries add worse: verses made up about their women.

There is no suggestion in the ayah that this is trivial or that a strong person would not feel it. It is listed alongside losing your money and your life. Perhaps you have been told to ignore what was said, as though words were weather. The Quran does not say that. It says: you will certainly hear a great deal of it.

And kathīran, much. Not one incident to be survived. A supply.

That changes what you prepare for. People brace for catastrophe and are undone by a sentence. The ayah has the order right: your wealth, your body, and then the long attrition of being spoken about. If you are currently sleepless over something somebody said, you are not weak and you are not off the route. You are on the part of it that was named in advance.
