Ali 'Imran 3:185

“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.”

Essence

Nothing here is your wage: this life is a sip, hired kit and a fair outside, and winning is being shoved clear.

A reflection

A sip, not a meal

A cheesemonger cuts a sliver off the wheel and hands it over on the blade of the knife. Not a wedge. A sliver. From that one piece a buyer knows the season the milk came from. He knows how long it has been kept, and whether to take the whole wheel. Tasting is not a smaller version of eating. It is the method by which a thing is known.

That is the verb this ayah uses, and it is not the obvious choice. Every soul will taste death. The lexicons are precise: to taste was to take a little, and for a large amount the Arabs said eating. An archer would taste a bow, drawing the string just far enough to feel how much it would give. So tasting is testing by a small amount, and the word then spread to anything that befalls a person, sweet or bitter. That is established usage.

So death is not described as an ending you undergo. It is described as something you will know by taste, the way you know salt.

The poets of the Arabs heard it that way too. One line preserved in the commentaries says it plainly. Whoever does not die in sound youth dies of old age; death has a cup, and the man is its taster. Another line is better still. Death is a door, and all people go in by it; if only I knew what the house is, beyond the door.

The grammarians add one small detail with an odd kick in it. A reading exists that puts death in the accusative rather than joining it to the participle. The reason given is that the soul has not tasted it yet. The word is facing forward. It is not a report. It is an appointment.

And kullu nafs, every soul, is the shortest demolition of exceptions ever written. Not most. Not eventually, for the unlucky. Every.

So the honest response is not dread; dread is the opposite of tasting, and it closes the mouth. It is attention. You will be given one sip of the thing that explains everything beyond the door. You will take it at a moment nobody has told you.
