Ali 'Imran · Madani · ayah 196 of 200

Ali 'Imran 3:196

لَا يَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ

“Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Do not let the sight of them moving freely about the land take you in; the ayah is about your eyes, not their luck.

A reflection

The sentence that was said out loud first

One concise commentary records what prompted this. The Muslims said: the enemies of Allah are in all this good that we can see, and we are in hardship.

It is worth stopping on that. The complaint came from believers, and nobody is rebuked for feeling it. The ayah arrives as treatment, not as telling-off. Another commentary makes the purpose explicit: it is so that you do not end up in grief and distress at the state of them.

So this is an ayah about a specific pain, and the pain has a shape. It is not wanting what they have. It is the suspicion that the arrangement is wrong.

A man has run a two-van business for nineteen years. Every job declared, every receipt kept, including the ones nobody would ever ask for. Across town a competitor takes half his work in cash and undercuts him by a fifth. This spring he has put up a new yard with a sign lit from inside. The man passes it on his way to a job and says nothing to anybody. Something in him has gone slightly sour over the winter.

He has not been tempted to copy him. That is not the problem. The problem is that the lit sign has started to look like evidence.

That is exactly what the Arabic word for deception means. The lexicons give it as leading someone on with false hopes until he neglects what matters. The deception is not that the yard is imaginary. The yard is real. The deception is what he has concluded from it.

And notice the mercy in the grammar. Allah does not say: their prosperity is nothing. He says: do not let it take you in. He is not arguing with the man's eyes. He is telling him what not to build on what he saw.
