Ali 'Imran 3:24

“That is because they say, "Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days," and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing.”

Essence

The most dangerous lie is the guarantee you invented for yourself: 'it will only be a few days', and then you believe it.

A reflection

'Only a few days'

A man who has missed prayers for years says it lightly at a family dinner. 'I'm Muslim. Worst case, I'll do a bit of time and then I'm in.' Everyone laughs. Nobody asks where the guarantee came from.

The ayah explains why some turned away from the Book's judgement. Dhālika bi-annahum qālū lan tamassanā al-nāru illā ayyāman maʿdūdāt. That is because they said: the Fire will not touch us except for a counted number of days. One commentary records their specific claim: forty days, the length of time their forefathers worshipped the calf. Another adds what the belief produced: boldness towards Allah and contempt for His religion.

The root of maʿdūdāt carries the trick. Whatever can be counted is limited, so 'counted' came to mean 'few'. The phrase shrinks the punishment to something you could tick off on a calendar. Once it is small enough, it is no longer frightening, and once it is no longer frightening, nothing needs to change.

This is not only a story about others. The man at the dinner table is a Muslim version of it. 'Allah is Forgiving' is true. Used as a guarantee to keep sinning, it becomes exactly the counted days of this ayah: a promise nobody made.

The Quran does hold out vast mercy, and despair is forbidden. But mercy is something you ask for and turn towards. It is not a pass you issue to yourself.

If there is a sin you have filed under 'it won't be much', take it out tonight and look at it honestly. Then ask for the mercy, instead of assuming it.
