Ali 'Imran · Madani · ayah 25 of 200
Ali 'Imran 3:25
“So how will it be when We assemble them for a Day about which there is no doubt? And each soul will be compensated [in full for] what it earned, and they will not be wronged.”
Saheeh International
Essence
On that certain Day every soul is paid in full for what it carried home; nothing shaved off, nothing added on.
A reflection
'So how will it be?'
On a walking holiday, a man spends the afternoon telling his friends he has never needed a map in his life. At dusk they come out of the woods onto a road none of them recognises. He goes quiet. Nobody says anything. The silence says it all.
The previous ayah gave the confident claim: the Fire will only touch us for a few counted days. This ayah does not argue with it. It simply asks: fa-kayfa, so how will it be, when We gather them for a Day about which there is no doubt? One modern commentary fills in the unspoken answer: their state and their regret will be as bad as can be.
The question is the whole reply. It invites the reader to picture the moment the invented guarantee meets the real Day. No debate is needed. Reality will do the arguing.
Notice the speaker. Jamaʿnāhum: We gather them. The plural of majesty. Every boast about counted days is made by creatures about a Day that belongs to Him alone. So is every confident 'I'll be fine'. The ego loves to be the one who predicts its own verdict. The ayah takes the verdict out of its hands.
Why would Allah describe His power to gather and repay? Not to frighten for the sake of it, and not because He needs our fear. 'What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe?' (4:147). He tells us now, while we can still change the ending.
Take the question home tonight: so how will it be, for me? Answer it honestly, and let the answer change one thing tomorrow.
