Ali 'Imran 3:33
“Indeed, Allāh chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ʿImrān over the worlds -”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah chose Adam, Nūḥ, the family of Ibrāhīm and the family of ʿImrān above the people of their times, drawing them off like clear water.
A reflection
No one applies to be chosen
A sixth-former rewrites her university personal statement for the eleventh time. Every sentence is built to make a stranger choose her. By midnight she is not sure which parts are true.
The ayah opens with a verb that belongs to Allah alone in this sentence. Iṣṭafā: He chose. The lexicons picture the root as water left to stand until the silt sinks to the bottom. Then the clear part at the top is drawn off. That clear part is the ṣafwa. To be chosen in this sense is to be drawn off as the clearest, by the One who let the water settle.
Look at the list. Adam, the father of humanity. Nūḥ, whom a modern commentary calls the first messenger sent to the people of the earth. The family of Ibrāhīm, in whom prophethood continued. The family of ʿImrān. None of them applied. None wrote a statement or lobbied a committee. Adam was created, then honoured with the angels' prostration and taught the names. Nūḥ was sent, and called his people night and day, openly and in secret.
This is where the ego is put in its place. We live in a culture of self-selection. We curate, pitch and promote, hoping to be picked. The ayah describes a choosing that no one earns by campaigning. It is the act of the One who knows what is in the water before it settles.
Someone may ask why Allah announces His choosing, as if displaying His power. He is free of all need (35:15). The announcement is not for Him. It tells the listeners, including the Christian delegation of Najrān to whom these ayat were addressed, where honour comes from. Honour does not come from a family name or a crowd's approval. It comes from His choice.
The sixth-former may still need her statement. But she can write it knowing that the choices that matter most are not made by readers of statements.
