Ali 'Imran 3:32

“Say, "Obey Allāh and the Messenger. But if you turn away - then indeed, Allāh does not like the disbelievers."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Obey Allah and the Messenger, because he is the one sent; whoever turns his back on that has turned away from the love just offered.

A reflection

Yielding to the lightest touch

At a county show, a dressage rider and her horse move through the arena as if they were one animal. Afterwards someone asks how hard she pulls on the reins. She laughs. 'If I have to pull, we have already lost.'

That is the picture inside the word the ayah uses. Aṭīʿū, obey, comes from a root the lexicons describe with animals and harvests. A horse that is ṭawʿ al-ʿinān is easy on the rein. A she-camel that never pulls against the one leading her is ṭawʿat al-qiyād. Ripe dates aṭāʿat when they gave themselves to the picker's hand. The opposite of ṭāʿa is karh, doing a thing against your will.

So the obedience asked for here is not a prisoner's compliance. It is the yielding of something that has come willingly. And it follows straight on from love. The previous ayah said: if you love Allah, follow me. This one says: obey. Love that has found its object answers the lightest touch.

Allah needs none of this obedience. He is free of all need (35:15). Whoever strives, strives for himself (29:6). The yielding is for us. Many people today live pulled in every direction at once: by appetites, by opinions, by fear of missing out. They are not free. They are simply obeying many masters badly.

The ayah offers one rein, held by One who knows the way. There is a peace in that which no amount of self-direction gives. 'Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest' (13:28).

The rider does not feel controlled by her horse's willingness. She feels trusted. The servant who yields to Allah is not made smaller. He is finally moving in the direction he was made for.
