Ali 'Imran 3:81

“And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allāh took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allāh] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?"[136] They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."”

Essence

Allah bound every prophet by covenant to believe in and support a later messenger confirming them, and witnessed the pledge Himself.

A reflection

Even the prophets stood and pledged

Picture the scene the ayah describes. The prophets, the most honoured human beings who ever lived, are gathered before their Lord. Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, ʿĪsā, and every messenger between them. Allah takes from them a covenant. They answer: 'We affirm it'. And He says: 'Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses'.

The word for covenant, mīthāq, comes from a root that pictures a knot pulled tight, the rope that holds firm. The binding word in the ayah, iṣr, pictures the rope that pegs a tent to the ground. One early writer explains it as the weight of the pledge they were made to carry.

If these were the ones bound, who are we to imagine ourselves unbound? The greatest men of history did not stand before Allah as negotiators. They stood as servants, accepting terms, giving their word.

This is a powerful cure for the ego. We often resent being bound. We like options, exits, the freedom to change our minds. Yet the noblest human beings accepted a binding covenant from their Lord, and that acceptance was part of their greatness.

And notice the last line. Allah does not merely take the pledge. He witnesses it Himself. A concise commentary explains: a witness over you and over them. He has no need of their pledge. It is for them, and for those who would follow them, so that the chain of guidance holds.

Pride says: no one tells me what to do. The prophets said: we affirm.
