Ali 'Imran 3:80

“Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?”

Saheeh International

Essence

No prophet would command you to take angels or prophets as lords; would he order disbelief after you have submitted to Allah?

A reflection

Honour without worship

At a gathering in the Prophet's honour, a poet's verses grow more lavish with every line. The crowd is swept along. Then an old man in the front row says, quietly but clearly, 'ʿabduhu wa rasūluh': His servant and His messenger.

The old man was quoting the Prophet ﷺ himself. Sahih al-Bukhari records ʿUmar speaking from the pulpit. He heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'Do not over-praise me as the Christians over-praised the son of Mary. I am only His servant. So say: the servant of Allah and His messenger'.

The commentaries also preserve a report from the same period. A man asked whether they should prostrate to the Prophet ﷺ, rather than greet him as they greeted one another. He replied that no one should prostrate to anyone besides Allah. But honour your Prophet, he said, and know the right of those to whom it is due.

Those two sayings mark the line this ayah draws. Love for the Prophet ﷺ is part of faith. Honouring him is a duty. Following him is the path. But lordship belongs to Allah alone. A prophet's highest title is 'servant'.

A modern concise commentary puts the ayah plainly. It would never be for any prophet to command you to take angels or prophets as lords whom you worship besides Allah.

This is not coldness towards the Prophet ﷺ. It is how he asked to be loved. The deepest honour we can give him is to keep his own words: servant of Allah, and His messenger.
