Ali 'Imran 3:92

“Never will you attain the good [reward][138] until you spend [in the way of Allāh] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.”

Saheeh International

Essence

You will never reach true goodness until you spend from what you love; and whatever you spend, Allah knows it exactly.

A reflection

He knows what it cost, not only what it was

On a fundraising page, two donations sit side by side. Both read one hundred pounds. One came out of the overflow of a bonus and was forgotten by lunchtime. The other was a month of bringing lunch from home in a plastic box.

The page cannot tell them apart. No page can. Every ledger humans keep records amounts, because amounts are all a ledger can hold.

Then the ayah closes: and whatever you spend, Allah is Knowing of it. The commentaries draw out three things He knows. The amount, small or large. The quality, whether you gave the best or the worst of what you had. And the reason, whether it was sincerity or display.

Sit with that third one for a moment, because it is where the ego goes quiet. We would all rather be judged on the figure. The figure is flattering. It says nothing about the hour we spent making sure the right person saw it, or the small warmth we felt when they did.

One lexicon notes that the Arabs called a tall mountain an ʿalam, a landmark. ʿIlm, ʿalāma and maʿlam all name what points to a thing. By one classical derivation, knowledge in this root is a landmark: what shows the way. Nothing is hidden behind the mountain.

There is a kind of pride in wanting to be the one who keeps the record. Keeping the record means setting the criteria, and we are generous graders of ourselves. The ayah removes the pen from our hand.

And notice what this is not. It is not a God who needs the money, or needs to be told, or needs the credit. The next ayah in the sequence shows Him refusing an earth of gold. He is not short. Nothing you give adds to Him.

So the record He keeps is not for Him. It is the only record that will not undervalue the month of plastic lunchboxes. An early commentator paraphrases the ending beautifully: it is preserved for you, and He is Grateful for it.

That should change how you give this week. Stop worrying about the figure. Start noticing what it costs, because that is the column He is actually reading.
