Ali 'Imran 3:96
إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِى بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
“Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The first House ever set down for all people is the one at Bakka: blessed, and a guidance for every world.
A reflection
He set the point, and nobody voted on it
Every height on a national map is measured from a single brass plate bolted to a harbour wall. It was not chosen for beauty or for fame. Somebody with the authority to decide fixed it. From that moment every mountain, road gradient and flood map in the country depended on a disc nobody looks at.
The commentaries say this ayah came down after a complaint about ranking. When the direction of prayer was turned towards the Ka'ba, the objection was that Jerusalem had the stronger claim. It was older, the land of the gathering, the direction faced by prophets. The answer does not argue about architecture or history-keeping. It simply states where the first House set down for all people is.
Notice the verb. Wuḍiʿa: it was set down. Passive. Nobody is told who put it there, because in the Quran's grammar that is not in question.
And the place. Sahih al-Bukhari records the moment Ibrahim left his wife and nursing son there. There was nobody in Makka that day, and there was no water in it. The dua he made is in the Quran: our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley with no cultivation (14:37). That is the site. Not a river delta, not a capital, not a trade centre at the time it was named.
Here is where the ego quietly shrinks. We rank things constantly and with great confidence. Which school, which postcode, which family, which name on a letterhead. We do it so continually that we mistake the rankings for facts about the world.
The ayah says the most honoured ground on earth was a dry valley with nothing on it. He said so, and that is the whole of the reason.
There is a hint of this in the word awwal itself. The lexicons note that the root holds a beginning and an end together. Āla is to return, to come round to where a thing belongs; milk āla when it thickened into its final state. That connection is established in the lexicons. So the first House is also the House of return, the point the whole of history leans back towards. He is the First and the Last (57:3).
Which should take the sting out of your own rankings, and most of the pride in them. You did not set the datum. You are being measured from it.
