Essence
Three unexplained letters guard an opening a calendar could check: a forecast about two empires, spoken into a gloating city.
A reflection
Not the usual doorway
If you have read the Quran for years, you probably carry a quiet rule about these letters. Alif Lām Mīm is a doorway. It is the same doorway each time, and the real surah starts on the next line. The eye slides over it on the way in.
Here that rule hides something. A classical commentator noticed a pattern across the surahs that open with separate letters. Almost every time, the next words speak of the Book, the Revelation or the Quran. 'Alif Lām Mīm. That is the Book' (2:1-2). 'Ṭā Hā. We did not send down the Quran to you to make you miserable' (20:1-2). 'Yā Sīn. By the wise Quran' (36:1-2).
Al-Rūm breaks the pattern. After its letters comes no mention of a Book at all. What comes is news: 'The Romans have been defeated' (30:2). Then a forecast: after their defeat, they will overcome.
The same commentator explained the break. Where the letters stand before the Book, the Book itself is the wonder that follows. Here the wonder is of another kind. It is news of the unseen, of something that had not yet happened. So the letters come first, and no one can explain them. They make the listener turn his heart towards what is coming. Then the sign arrives and strikes the ears.
Think of what that meant for the first hearers. Three sounds they could not decode. Then a sentence about a war they had already heard of. Then a promise they could hold up against the calendar.
So the old rule needs adjusting. The letters are not a fixed doormat. Here they work like a wax seal on an envelope. You cannot read the seal. But the letter underneath has a date on it, and anyone in Makkah could wait for that date.
That is the image to keep for this surah. A seal you cannot open with your own hands, set over a promise that history would open in front of everyone.
