Ar-Rum 30:20

وَمِنْ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦٓ أَنْ خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَآ أَنتُم بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُونَ

“And of His signs is that He created you from dust; then, suddenly you were human beings dispersing [throughout the earth].”

Saheeh International

Essence

From dust, the stillest and least living thing, He made you, and suddenly there you are: human, aware, spreading across the earth.

A reflection

The stuff in the hoover bag

Open the vacuum cleaner and take out the bag. Inside is a grey felt of dust, fluff and grit. You hold it away from your face and drop it in the bin. Nobody keeps it. Nobody has ever been proud of it.

That is the material this ayah names. Min turāb: from dust.

One classical commentator explained why dust, of all things. It is the furthest thing in the world from being alive, he wrote. Life is warm and moist; dust is cold and dry. Life moves; dust lies where it falls. Water at least flows, and fire at least warms. Dust only settles. Another commentator added that it had never caught the faintest scent of life.

Out of that, the ayah says, came you. And the same commentator noticed two words that make it stranger. Bashar, a human being, points to a creature that perceives and knows. Tantashirūn, you spread out, points to a creature that moves with purpose. Thinking out of the densest thing; travelling out of the stillest. Either alone would be a marvel.

The first hearers knew another face of this word. In their speech, a man tariba when he grew so poor that he clung to the ground. Nothing was left between him and the earth. The lexicons record it. Dust was the lowest place a person could fall.

So where does the ego stand after this? Every boast is made of dust that has been taught to speak. The CV, the title, the handsome face: all of it is the bag's contents, arranged for a while by Another.

The doubt is fair. Is this meant to humiliate? Does Allah remind us of dust so that we will feel small and praise Him more? Read on, and the ayah does the opposite. It lifts you straight from dust to bashar, a being who knows, spreading across the earth. The reminder is not a sneer. It is a placing. You are small in origin and honoured in making, and both are His doing. Humility and dignity arrive in the same sentence. He loses nothing if you forget; you lose your footing.
