Ar-Rum 30:11

ٱللَّهُ يَبْدَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُۥ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ

“Allāh begins creation; then He will repeat it; then to Him you will be returned.”

Essence

After empires and ruined nations, a sentence opens with His name: He begins creation, repeats it, and brings you back to Him.

A reflection

After the empires, one name

Read Ar-Rum from its opening to here and count the great actors. Rome, defeated and then victorious. Persia, triumphant and then beaten. The believers, rejoicing on a day of victory. The ancient nations, stronger than Quraysh, who ploughed deep and built high and lay in ruins.

Then this ayah. It opens with a single name: Allāhu. Allah begins the creation.

After ten ayat of history, the subject of the sentence changes. Every power named so far was something begun. Each had a first day and a last one. Here is the One who does the beginning. One classical commentator stresses that He begins it alone, with no partner and no helper, bringing it from nothing.

That is where the ego is quietly put back in its place. The headlines of any age are full of names that seem to steer the world. Emperors and markets. Founders and armies. The ayah sets them all in a single word, al-khalq, the creation. They are things He began and will make again. None of them is the subject of the main sentence.

You are in that word too. Your career, your reputation and your plans are all part of what was begun. Pride forgets this and talks as if it were the author. Humility simply remembers its grammar.

Some may ask whether opening with His own name is self-praise. But putting Him first is not flattery. It is accuracy. A map marks north not to honour the pole, but because without it you cannot read anything else. Allah gains nothing from being named first. You gain your bearings.

So when the news is loud with powers rising and falling, remember how this passage moves. It tells the story of the empires, and then it says: Allah. Let your own sentences end up in the same order.
