Ar-Rum 30:14

وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَفَرَّقُونَ

“And the Day the Hour appears - that Day they will become separated.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Hour that gathers everyone also parts them, cleanly and for ever, each to the side their life was already leaning.

A reflection

The parting in the hair

The verb here is yatafarraqūn, they will be separated. Its root, f-r-q, begins with a picture from daily life. The farq is the parting in the hair: a clean line, with each strand on one side or the other.

The root keeps that clean line wherever it goes. When the sea split for Musa, each part stood like a great mountain (26:63). Dawn was called furqān because it separates night from day. A small flock strayed from the main herd was a farīqa. This is not scattering in chaos. It is a marking apart.

Picture someone combing wet hair in front of a mirror. She draws the comb down the middle. She does not decide where each strand will fall. Every hair drops to the side it was already leaning towards. The comb only makes the lean visible.

That is what the form of the verb suggests. Tafarraqa is a reflexive form: they become separated, they part. The commentators described the outcome. The people of faith are taken to the right, to the Garden. The people of denial are taken to the left, to the Fire. One modern commentary says they are separated by their deeds in this world.

So the parting on that Day is not a coin toss. It does not cut against the grain of anyone's life. It follows the grain. Every small choice, repeated over years, gives a strand of the self its lean. The Day only draws the comb.

This should both sober and steady a reader. It sobers, because there is no last-minute luck to hope for. The direction is being set now. It steadies, because the lean can still change. A strand can be trained to fall another way, with patience and with care.

Ask, then, which way your days are leaning. Look at what you reach for first in the morning and last at night. Notice where your free hour goes. That is the side the comb will find.
