Ar-Rum 30:16

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَلِقَآئِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ مُحْضَرُونَ

“But as for those who disbelieved and denied Our verses and the meeting of the Hereafter, those will be brought into the punishment [to remain].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who covered the truth, called His signs lies and denied the meeting are brought into the punishment, and kept there, never absent from it.

A reflection

A verb for joy, a noun for the fire

Set this ayah beside the one before it and listen to the grammar. The believers in 30:15 are in a garden, yuḥbarūn: they are made glad. The deniers here are in the punishment, muḥḍarūn: brought.

A classical commentator noticed that the first is a verb and the second a noun. A verb carries renewal, he explained. Something new comes to the people of the garden every hour to delight them. A noun carries a fixed state. Those brought into the punishment stay brought.

He noticed a second contrast. 'A garden' is indefinite, rawḍatin, and the indefinite here magnifies it. It is a garden beyond describing. 'The punishment' is definite, al-ʿadhāb: the known one, already named and warned of many times.

Picture two things at one house after a flood. On the kitchen wall a clock has stopped at the hour the water came in. Its hands will show that hour for as long as it hangs there. In the garden outside, a small fountain runs. It looks the same at every glance, yet its water is new every second.

One is a noun. The other is a verb. These two ayat give the believers' joy the shape of the fountain, always arriving. They give the deniers' loss the shape of the stopped clock.

There is a lesson for now as well. Faith is not meant to be a fixed possession you finished acquiring years ago. It is meant to keep arriving. If your faith feels like a stopped clock, the ayah suggests where to look. Not for one huge moment, but for the next small renewal: a fresh ayah, a fresh prayer, a fresh kindness.

And the stopped clock warns about a heart, not only a place. Refusing every sign can freeze a person at the hour they first said no.
