Ar-Rum 30:19
“He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. And thus will you be brought out.[1143]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Life comes from death and death from life every day; the One who moves both ways says: so you will be brought out.
A reflection
Traffic in both directions
A primary school keeps an incubator on a classroom windowsill for three weeks. Twelve eggs sit under a lamp, and nothing happens. They look exactly like the eggs in the fridge at home. Then one morning a crack appears. A beak works at it, and a wet, furious chick shoves its way into the world. Thirty children forget to breathe.
The classical commentators reached for this very picture. The living from the dead: a bird out of an egg, a person out of a drop that looked lifeless. The dead from the living: the egg from the hen, the drop from the man. One commentator widened it to pairs everywhere: the plant from the grain, and the grain from the plant.
Notice the traffic runs both ways. Life does not only come out of death; death also comes out of life. One Hand keeps both lanes open. A commentator observed that this whole run of ayat is built on opposites. They are named in pairs so that no one imagines the power works in one direction only.
Here the ego has to sit down. Nobody in that classroom made the chick. The teacher set the lamp, turned the eggs and watched the temperature. She was faithful to the conditions. The life itself she could only witness. Every parent holding a newborn stands in the same place. We supply conditions; we never supply life. Forget that, and people start talking about "my" children as a project and "my" success as a creation.
The arrogance question deserves a fair hearing. This ayah follows a command to glorify Allah morning and evening (30:17–18). Why does He then describe His own power at length? Does He need us to notice? He does not. The incubator taught the children nothing about the chick's needs. It taught them their own size. Praise is simply the truth said aloud, and the one who says it is the one set right. The chick was coming out whether anyone clapped or not.
