Ar-Rum 30:29
“But those who wrong follow their [own] desires without knowledge. Then who can guide one whom Allāh has sent astray? And for them there are no helpers.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The problem was never a lack of proof: desire, followed without knowledge, leads where no guide and no helper can follow.
A reflection
Nobody reasons their way home alone
The middle of the ayah is a question with only one answer. Fa-man yahdī man aḍalla Allāh? So who can guide the one Allah has left astray? No one. Guidance is His to give, and His alone.
That sentence is aimed first at the deniers. But it has a quieter edge for the believer.
Picture a man who came to faith in his thirties after years of reading philosophy. He is sincere. But online he has begun to speak with an edge. He reasoned his way in, he says. Unlike those who just inherited it. He mocks people who pray without being able to explain the cosmological argument.
He has forgotten something. The same books he read have been read by thousands who walked away unmoved. His mind did the walking. But who opened the door?
The Prophet ﷺ reported his Lord as saying: 'My servants, all of you are astray except the one I guide. So ask Me for guidance, and I will guide you' (Sahih Muslim). Every single one of us is included in 'all of you are astray'. The convert, the scholar, the child raised in a mosque.
This is why the believer asks for guidance in every unit of every prayer. We say: guide us to the straight path. Not because we have no guidance. Because we did not produce it, and we cannot keep it by ourselves.
Some hear this as arrogance on Allah's side: a God who insists we ask Him. But asking is not flattery. It is accuracy. A man drowning who calls out to the boat is not praising the boat. He is telling the truth about where rescue comes from.
The ego wants guidance to be its own achievement. This ayah gently takes that away. What you understand of Him is a gift. Hold it with open hands, and keep asking.
