Ar-Rum 30:43
“So direct your face [i.e., self] toward the correct religion before a Day comes from Allāh of which there is no repelling. That Day, they will be divided.[1152]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Turn wholly to the upright religion now, before a Day comes from Allah that nobody can send back, when people crack apart into two companies.
A reflection
The one day that cannot be sent back
Yawmun lā maradda lahu min Allāh: a Day from Allah that has no turning back.
The root of maradd means turning a thing back the way it came. A false coin handed back to its payer was radd, rejected. A greeting returned is radd. A prop that stops something falling was a ridd, because it pushes the fall back.
Modern life is built on the hope that everything can be sent back. Shops have returns desks. Courts have appeals. Contracts have cooling-off periods. Email has an 'unsend' button. Picture a man who fires off an angry message to his manager. He lunges for 'undo' and watches the little window close. The message has gone. For a moment he feels something rare: a thing that will not come back.
The ayah describes an entire Day with that quality. The commentators read the phrase two ways. Either no one can push back a Day that Allah brings. Or Allah Himself will not withdraw it once He has decreed it. Either way, every route of return is closed. One commentator added that its coming from Allah adds to its weight. It comes from the Mighty, the One whose authority overrules all.
This is where the ego shrinks. Our pride depends on keeping options open. We negotiate, delay, appeal and reschedule. Here is one appointment that no status, wealth or cleverness can move.
Is this a display of power for its own sake? A ruler who boasts that his decrees cannot be challenged usually wants to be feared. Allah needs neither our fear nor our praise. He tells us the Day is fixed so that we stop gambling on a postponement that will never come. The warning is given while 'before' still exists, min qabli an yaʾtiya. That is the mercy inside the majesty.
