Al-Ahzab 33:22
“And when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allāh and His Messenger had promised us, and Allāh and His Messenger spoke the truth." And it increased them only in faith and acceptance.”

Essence
Seeing the armies they had been warned of, the believers knew the trial as the promise itself, and it only deepened their faith.
A reflection
The promise they saw was the storm itself
Ask most readers what the believers meant by 'this is what Allah and His Messenger promised us'. The answer comes quickly: victory. They saw the armies and trusted that a win was on its way.
That is half true, and it misses the startling part. The early commentators say the promise they recognised was the hardship itself. Al-Baqarah had already told them plainly. Did you think you would enter the Garden before you were tested like those before you? They were struck by misery and hardship, and shaken, until the Messenger and the believers with him cried: when is Allah's help? Then came the answer: Allah's help is near (2:214).
So when ten thousand men appeared around Madina, the believers did not say the promise had failed. They said: here it is. The shaking was on the timetable. It proved they were on the road they had been told about, not off it.
An antenatal class meets on a Tuesday evening. The midwife describes a stage near the end that she calls transition. Many women, she says, suddenly cry out that they cannot do this any more. When you hear that, she tells the partners, do not panic. It usually means the baby is close. Weeks later, in a delivery room at four in the morning, his wife says exactly those words. He feels the fear rise, and then he remembers. This is what she told us.
The warning did not make the pain smaller. It changed what the pain meant. Without it, those words would have sounded like failure. With it, they sounded like arrival.
That is the believers' sentence. Hardship that has been foretold cannot shake the foundation, because it confirms it. The ayah asks you to read your own trials the same way. Not every hard season is a punishment, or a sign that you took a wrong turn. Some of it is simply the steep stretch of road you were told to expect.
