Al-Baqarah 2:214

“Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allāh?" Unquestionably, the help of Allāh is near.”

Essence

Paradise is not reached without being shaken; even the Messenger cried 'When is Allah's help?', and the answer came: it is near.

A reflection

'Are we nearly there?'

On a long drive, a child in the back seat asks 'are we nearly there?' every four minutes. The father, who knows the road, smiles each time. He does not drive faster, but he does not stop answering.

'Truly, the help of Allah is near'. The word for help, naṣr, has a picture in its root: rain arriving on dry land. The word for near, qarīb, has another. The lexicons describe thirsty camels pressing on through the last night, because the water is close.

The ayah does not give a date. It gives a nearness. That is the voice of majesty. The One who knows the whole road does not hand His timetable to the passengers. He promises arrival.

The ego wants control of the timing. We set deadlines for our prayers to be answered, and when they pass, we feel let down. Sahih al-Bukhari records the Prophet ﷺ gently telling his persecuted Companions: 'but you are a people in a hurry'.

Why test people at all? A classical commentator connects this ayah to another. 'Do people think they will be left alone to say "we believe" and not be tested?' (29:2). The testing shows what is true and what was only said.

Does Allah need our patience? No. He is free of all need (35:15). The waiting is for us. It is where faith stops being a sentence and becomes a road. And the One driving has promised that the water is close.
