Al-Ahzab 33:36

“It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allāh and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.”

Essence

When Allah and His Messenger settle a matter the better is already chosen, and the only way to lose is to leave the guide.

A reflection

You may have heard this as the end of thinking

A self-styled teacher on a late-night livestream is losing an argument. A viewer has questioned his ruling on a business dispute. He reads this ayah aloud, slowly, and says: when the matter is decided, you have no choice. The comments fall silent.

Many people carry this ayah in that shape. A verse that ends discussion. Whoever speaks in religion's name has decided, so stop thinking. Heard that way, it sounds like a gag.

Now read whose decision it names. Idhā qaḍā Allāhu wa rasūluhu amran: when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter. Not a teacher, not a scholar, not a council. Two, and only two.

One classical scholar draws the line sharply. Allah, he says, cut off choosing after His command and His Messenger's. But choosing remains open in the words of anyone else, when the Messenger's command is hidden. Following such a person is permitted, not obligatory. Every other human voice is a messenger of the message at most, never its founder. Its words are weighed against what the Prophet ﷺ brought, accepted if they match and set aside if they do not.

So the ayah does the opposite of what the livestream claimed. It closes choice in one place so that it can stay open everywhere else. No preacher can borrow its authority. The ayah has already named who holds it.

Then notice where the ayah sits. One commentary points out that a few ayat earlier the Prophet's wives were given a completely free choice (33:28-29). Someone might conclude, it says, that every matter is like that, with the reins of choice in your own hands. This ayah corrects that. Some matters are left to you. Some have been settled.

The same commentary gives the reason in a single image. Allah is the destination, it says, and the Prophet ﷺ is the guide who brings you there. Whoever leaves the destination and will not listen to the guide is lost, without doubt.

That is not the end of thinking. It is thinking about where you are trying to go, and who actually knows the way.
