Al-Ahzab 33:37

“And [remember, O Muḥammad], when you said to the one on whom Allāh bestowed favor and you bestowed favor,[1198] "Keep your wife and fear Allāh," while you concealed within yourself that which Allāh is to disclose.[1199] And you feared the people,[1200] while Allāh has more right that you fear Him.[1201] So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort [i.e., guilt] concerning the wives of their claimed [i.e., adopted] sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command [i.e., decree] of Allāh accomplished.”

Essence

A Prophet who feared people's talk is told that Allah has more right to be feared, and that His command is always carried out.

A reflection

The fear that shrinks every other fear

Near its centre the ayah holds a sentence that reaches every reader. Wa takhshā l-nāsa wa-llāhu aḥaqqu an takhshāh. And you fear people, while Allah has more right that you should fear Him.

The word for fear here is khashya. The lexicons say it is not panic. It is fear mixed with reverence, and it grows from knowing how great the one before you is. The Quran gives it a picture of its own: rocks that split and tumble down from khashya of Allah (2:74).

One commentary reads the sentence with care. It does not mean, it says, that the Prophet ﷺ feared people and did not fear Allah. It means: Allah alone deserves your fear, so give it to Him alone, and fear no one beside Him. Two ayat later the surah describes the messengers who came before. They convey Allah's messages and fear Him, and fear no one but Allah (33:39).

Then the ayah closes on four words of sovereignty. Wa kāna amru Allāhi mafʿūlā. And Allah's command is always carried out. Whatever people say, whatever they whisper, His decision is done.

Put those two lines together and they shrink something in us. Much of what we call fear of people is really the ego guarding its reputation. What will they think of me? What will they say at the next gathering? We rehearse their judgement at night, long after they have forgotten us.

A junior engineer notices a flaw in a design that two senior colleagues have already signed off. Raising it means looking foolish if she is wrong, and awkward if she is right. For three days she says nothing, while the drawings move towards the client. Then she remembers that the bridge will carry people, whatever her colleagues think of her. She raises it. She was right.

The ayah offers the same release on a larger scale. The opinions of people are real, and they can sting. But they are small, and they pass. The One whose command is always done is the only judgement that lasts. Fear Him, and the other fears lose their grip.

Why would Allah want to be feared at all? Not to be flattered. Fear of Him is what frees a person from being ruled by everyone else.
