Saba 34:28
“And We have not sent you except comprehensively[1233] to mankind as a bringer of good tidings and a warner. But most of the people do not know.”
Saheeh International
Essence
One messenger, sent with good news and warning to every human being without exception, and most of them have not yet understood it.
A reflection
A hand that closes with no one left outside
Kāffatan: all together, without exception. The Word Dictionary's picture for its root, k-f-f, is a whole hand closing round a thing. The kaff is the palm, named for the way it grips. Nothing inside the closed hand is left out.
The lexicons add two more pictures. To kaffa someone is to hold him back. And the hem of a garment is its folded edge, turned so that the cloth does not fray. One commentator explains kāffa through that hem: a gathering of the edges.
A commentator on language puts the root to work in this ayah. The sending is all-embracing, he says, because when it covers people it holds them in, so that none of them slips outside it.
Picture a seamstress finishing a coat. She turns the hem and stitches it all the way round, seam to seam. No loose thread is left at any edge to unravel. The whole garment is held.
That is the scope of this message. No people sits at the frayed edge of it, too far, too foreign, too late. The trader in Makkah and the farmer on another continent stand inside the same stitched hem.
Some commentators read the word differently. They take kāffa as 'one who holds back': a messenger who restrains people from the ruin they are walking towards. Both readings come from the same palm. One hand gathers everyone in. The same hand, raised, stops them at the edge.
Either way, you are inside the hem. That is where the ayah leaves its reader.
It is a humbling place to stand. Nobody can say the message was meant for someone else, more devout or more Arab or more ancient. And nobody can be told by another that it was not meant for them. The hand has already closed, and you are in it.
