Saba 34:36
“Say, "Indeed, my Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it], but most of the people do not know."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Provision is a carpet only He unrolls and a measure only He sets; reading it as His verdict on you is the commonest human mistake.
A reflection
The carpet is His to unroll
The boasters of the last ayah pointed at their wealth. The Prophet ﷺ is told to reply with two verbs and a name. Yabsuṭu: He spreads it out. Yaqdiru: He measures it narrowly. And the subject of both is rabbī, 'my Lord'.
The lexicons give basṭ a plain, physical picture: a carpet unrolled across a floor, spread wide with room for all. Qadr is measure: the exact amount and limit of a thing, set by One with the power to set it. Between them, the two words describe every bank balance, harvest and salary in history. Someone unrolls. Someone measures. Neither is you.
That is hard on the ego, because the ego loves the story of the self-made. Picture a café owner invited to speak at a business breakfast. He talks for twenty minutes about his five o'clock starts and his eye for detail. He never mentions the year a large office block opened across the road. Overnight it sent him four hundred customers a day. His effort was real. But the carpet was unrolled under his feet by a decision he never took.
Qarun made the same speech with less modesty: 'I was only given it because of knowledge I have' (28:78). The ayah quietly removes the stage he was standing on.
Notice the tone of rabbī. It is not a lecture on economics. It is the Prophet ﷺ naming the One he personally trusts, in front of men who trusted their money. Their pride rested on what they held. His security rested on Who holds everything.
There is freedom in this humility. If the carpet is His to unroll, you need not be crushed when it is rolled back. And you need not be proud when it reaches you. You are a guest on it either way.
