Saba 34:35

وَقَالُوا۟ نَحْنُ أَكْثَرُ أَمْوَٰلًا وَأَوْلَـٰدًا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

“And they[1235] said, "We are more [than the believers] in wealth and children, and we are not to be punished."”

Essence

The pampered read their full tables as a verdict from heaven, and mistook a test for a guarantee of safety.

A reflection

A gift read as a verdict

The ayah records an argument in three steps, though only two are spoken. We have more wealth and children. Therefore God is pleased with us. Therefore we will not be punished. The commentaries supply the hidden middle step. Had He not been pleased with our way, they reasoned, He would not have given us all this. And one who has been generous to us will not then torment us.

It sounds almost pious. That is what makes it dangerous.

Picture a young man starting a new job. In his first week a generous welcome bonus lands in his account. He relaxes. Clearly they rate him. He starts arriving late and leaving early, and treats his probation review as a formality. The bonus was real. His reading of it was not. It was given to everyone who joined that quarter, and it said nothing at all about the review.

The pampered of every town made the same move. They took a gift and read it as a judgement. One classical commentator puts their error precisely. They measured the Hereafter, which they half denied, against the world they could see. Because they were honoured here, they assumed they were honoured there.

The next ayah breaks the link at once: 'My Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts it' (34:36). Provision is distributed by His wisdom, as a trial. It is not a grade.

The lesson reaches far beyond money. A healthy body, a quick mind, a family that never quarrels, a career that keeps rising: each can be misread in the same way. The heart quietly reasons that things going well must mean I am doing well. Sometimes that is true. But the gift alone never proves it. Only what you do with the gift can say anything about you.
