Saba · Makki · ayah 47 of 54

Saba 34:47

“Say, "Whatever payment I might have asked of you - it is yours. My payment is only from Allāh, and He is, over all things, Witness."”

Essence

The Prophet ﷺ asks no fee; whatever he asked comes back to you, his wage rests with Allah, and Allah witnesses everything.

A reflection

The Witness who makes an audience unnecessary

The ayah closes on a description of Allah, not of the Prophet ﷺ. He is, over all things, shahīd. The lexicons pack three things into that root, and it is established usage. Being present. Seeing with your own eyes. Then declaring what you saw. A witness in this sense was there, saw it, and will say so.

Now set that beside the claim just made: I have asked you for no wage. Nobody in Makkah could audit the Prophet's ﷺ heart. They could only guess at his motives. So he does not try to prove them. He names the One who was present at every one of them. One commentator explains the line as: He knows that I seek no reward from you, and want nothing of yours.

Most of us live the opposite way. We do good, then look round for someone who saw it. The ego treats an unwitnessed kindness as half-wasted.

A freelance translator is working late on a lease for a client abroad. In clause fourteen she notices that an earlier translator turned 'shall not' into 'shall'. The client would never have caught it. Fixing it, and checking every clause that depends on it, costs her an hour she cannot bill. She does it, sends the file and says nothing.

Who saw that hour? On the ayah's account, Someone did, fully, as present as she was. That shrinks the need to be seen down to its proper size. Our hunger for an audience is a kind of vanity, and also a kind of loneliness. Both ease once you know the only Witness who matters missed nothing.

Does Allah need us to know He is watching? He does not. The description is for the one who acts. It frees him from begging for the verdict of people who were never there.
