Saba 34:46

“Say, "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allāh, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought." There is not in your companion any madness. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment.”

Essence

The Prophet ﷺ asks one thing only: rise sincerely for Allah, in pairs or alone, then think honestly about the companion you have always known.

A reflection

One request, and it is not 'believe me'

A man who believes he carries the most important message in history might be expected to ask for a great deal. Belief, loyalty, a break with his family's gods. Instead he is told to say: I advise you of one thing only.

And the one thing is not 'accept me'. It is a method. Rise for Allah's sake, in twos or alone, and then think. The conclusion is left to them.

The commentators notice how the argument then runs. The ayah does not open with 'he is a messenger', which they would dispute. It opens with 'there is no madness in your companion', which they cannot. One classical reading calls this among the finest of approaches: establish the highest quality by first removing the lowest. Once they concede that he is sane, they must ask why a sane man would stake everything on such a claim.

The word ṣāḥibukum, your companion, carries the evidence. He was not a stranger off a ship. He grew up among them, and his whole life had been lived in front of them.

Think of a daughter who is worried about her father's driving at eighty-three. She could argue for an hour, and he would dig in. Instead she asks one thing. Drive me to the shop on Saturday, the usual route, and afterwards tell me honestly how it felt. She asks for no verdict, only an honest look at ground he already knows. By the second roundabout he has noticed for himself what she could never have told him.

For anyone who invites others to faith, this is a strategy worth copying. Ask for less than the conclusion. Ask for an honest look at what the other person already knows. Then trust the look.
