Fatir 35:29

“Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allāh and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a transaction [i.e., profit] that will never perish -”

Saheeh International

Essence

Those who keep reciting, praying and giving from Allah's provision, quietly and openly, hope for a trade that never goes stale.

A reflection

Giving away what was never yours

The ayah praises people who spend. Then it adds four quiet words: 'from what We provided them'. The wealth they give was put in their hands first. The 'We' is the plural of majesty. One commentary notes that tying provision to that great 'We' is itself an urging to give. It is His already.

The little word 'from' matters too. They spend from what they were given, not all of it. The same commentary reads it as a sign of balance. They did not squander, nor hold out their hands to empty. And the praise suggests they sought what was clean to give.

Picture a charity dinner in a hotel ballroom. Halfway through, the host begins to read pledges from the stage. Names are announced with amounts, and the room applauds each one. At table nine, a man has written a large cheque. He sits very straight and waits for his name. When it is read, he half rises and nods to the room.

Nothing he gave was his to begin with. His health to earn it, his mind to plan, the client who paid, the day he was born: all were provided. Applauding a giver is not wrong, and an open gift can lead others. But the ego that rises to its feet has forgotten the first four words. It is like a postman taking a bow for the parcels.

Does Allah need any of it? No. The surah has just said that people are the poor ones and He is the Rich (35:15). He asks for a share of what He gave, the way a father hands his child coins for the collection box. The father is not enriched. The child learns what hands are for.

So the next time you give, say the four words first, inwardly. From what He provided. It makes the gift lighter in the ego and heavier in the scale.
