Fatir 35:36
“And for those who disbelieve will be the fire of Hell. [Death] is not decreed for them[1252] so they may die, nor will its torment be lightened for them. Thus do We recompense every ungrateful one.”

Essence
For those who covered the truth and its gifts, the Fire neither ends nor eases, and the exit they counted on is not theirs.
A reflection
The one exit that was never in your contract
A certain kind of tenant only signs a lease with a break clause. Six months' notice, and he can leave. He likes the flat. He just cannot bear a door he does not hold the key to. Many of us live like that about everything: the job, the marriage, the faith. Always keep an exit.
Death is the exit of last resort. Whatever else fails, people tell themselves, that door at least stays open. It feels like the one thing we finally control.
This ayah closes even that door. Lā yuqḍā ʿalayhim fa-yamūtū: it is not decreed against them, so that they might die. Notice the passive verb. Even death is not something they do. It is something decreed, and here it is not decreed. One classical commentator explained it as no second death being ruled for them, so they could find rest from the punishment entirely.
Another commentator pointed to a scene elsewhere in the Quran. The people of the Fire call to its keeper: 'O Mālik, let your Lord finish us.' He answers: 'You will remain' (43:77). They now see death as relief, he wrote, but there is no road to it.
This is majesty of a sobering kind. The ego says: my life, my choices, my exit. The ayah answers that life was never on those terms. Every breath was given, and the last breath was never ours to schedule either.
Is this a display of power for its own sake? The ayah's last words say otherwise. Kadhālika najzī: this is how We recompense. A sentence read aloud in court is not for the judge's glory. It is read so everyone knows the law before they act. Allah gains nothing from it. The warning is for us, while every door is still open.
So stop living by break clauses with Allah. The only safe way to hold a door you do not own is to trust the One who does.
