مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّصْفُوفَةٍ ۖ وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍ
“They will be reclining on thrones lined up, and We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.”

Essence
Those who once stood shoulder to shoulder in prayer now recline in rows, face to face, at rest, with nothing left to perform and no one left alone.
A reflection
Off call at last
For twenty years a hospital consultant has been on call. Every evening the pager sat by her plate. Every night it sat by her bed. She learned to sleep lightly, to eat quickly, to never quite sit back in a chair. On the first evening of her retirement she lies full length on the sofa, and realises she has forgotten how.
A classical theologian explains the posture in this ayah. Muttakiʾīn: reclining. Leaning back, he says, is a posture belonging only to someone at ease, with no burden on them and no formality around them. If you are with someone you must put on a show for, you sit up straight; you do not recline in front of them. And if you are in the middle of something urgent, you have no time to lean back. So the posture itself is good news.
The lexicons add a picture. The root of reclining is about tying and firmness: a man braced on a staff, or settled where he sits like a tied skin, not about to rise.
Think how rarely modern people recline in this full sense. We sit on sofas with laptops. We lie in bed answering messages. We perform even when we relax: the holiday photo, the curated weekend. Many of us are on call to something, all the time, without a pager.
The ayah describes the end of that. No one left to impress. No task waiting. A body settled, not about to rise. For a believer who has spent a lifetime being responsible, this may be one of the most moving promises in the Quran.
It also says something about now. If even Paradise is described through rest, rest is not laziness. Tonight, put the phone in another room for one hour and sit back, really back, thanking Allah for the rest He has promised and the rest He gives today.
