As-Saffat 37:146
وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ
“And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.[1305]”
Saheeh International
Essence
On ground where nothing grew, Allah grew a gourd vine over a weak man: a humble plant, pitched over him like a tent.
A reflection
Who can make a seed rise?
Wa-anbatnā: and We caused to grow. The same 'We' that cast Yunus onto the shore now grows a plant over him. The ground was al-ʿarāʾ, bare land, which the commentaries define as having no tree, no plant and nothing to cover a person. Out of that bareness, something rose.
The root carries an established picture. Nabt is whatever rises from the earth, a green shoot pushing through soil after rain. The first hearers lived by the rains and knew exactly how much that rising meant. Families would crowd round generous homes through a barren year, as one poet put it, until the greens grew.
No human makes a seed rise. We can dig, water and wait. The pushing upward is not ours. A theological commentary, quoting an earlier scholar, notices that the ayah implies this gourd was not there before. Allah grew it for him. Some reports in the commentaries add that it grew and shaded him within a single day. Those are reports. The ayah's own claim is simpler and larger: We caused it to grow.
One report, preserved in a linguistic commentary, gives Allah's words to Yunus when the plant later withered. You did not create it, you did not water it, and you did not make it grow. It is a sentence every gardener could hear.
Picture a man who boasts at the allotment about his giant marrows. He talks about his compost, his timing, his secret feed. One dry August, his best plant wilts in two days despite everything he does. He stands over it with the hose, helpless.
Pride assumes we are the growers. This ayah says plainly who is. That is not boasting on Allah's part. It is the only accurate description of how anything green has ever grown. The humble response is not to stop gardening. It is to stop taking the credit.
