As-Saffat · Makki · ayah 145 of 182
As-Saffat 37:145
۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ
“But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.”
Saheeh International
Essence
'We cast him out': the fish moved, but Allah names Himself as the One who set Yunus down, weak as a newborn and not discarded.
A reflection
The fish opened its mouth; Allah says 'We'
Read the verb slowly. Fa-nabadhnāhu: so We cast him out. Physically, it was the fish that did it. Its body moved, its mouth opened, and the man was expelled onto the shore. Yet Allah does not say 'the fish cast him out'. He says 'We'.
A theological commentary pauses on exactly this point. Allah attributes the casting to Himself, though it happened through the fish's action. A linguistic commentary explains it as Allah making the fish eject him: the act is attributed to its real Commander. Either way, the ayah draws back the curtain on who moves the creatures of the sea.
This is majesty without noise. A vast animal, living in the deep, does exactly what it is told, at exactly the time it is told. One early report has the fish summoned from a distant river to arrive the instant Yunus fell. A linguistic commentary preserves it, and doubts it. The commentary rejects the report, but adds that Allah's power is far greater than that.
Now look at the human side. We like to be the authors of our rescues. A man walks away from a car crash with bruises. For weeks he tells visitors how quickly he reacted, how he turned the wheel just right. He never mentions the lorry that braked in time, the dry road, or the fact that he was alive to turn anything at all. His pride has quietly edited the story.
This ayah edits it back. Yunus did not swim to shore. He did not escape. He was set down. The plural of majesty, 'We', is not boasting. Boasting is claiming more than you have done. Allah is describing precisely what He did.
The ego shrinks in front of that sentence, and it should. Every shore we have ever been set down on, we were carried to.
