As-Saffat 37:155

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

“Then will you not be reminded?”

Saheeh International

Essence

'Will you not remember?': the truth about God is not new information to learn, but something already known, waiting to be recalled.

A reflection

A thread tied round the finger

Tadhakkarūn comes from dhikr, and the lexicons give the root a small, homely, established picture. A man who needed to remember something would tie a thread round his finger. That act was istadhkara. The thing you remember by is a tadhkira. 'Keep it ʿalā dhukr' meant: keep it where you will not forget it. Dhikr is simply the opposite of forgetting.

So the question in this ayah is not whether they will learn. It is whether they will remember. The Quraysh were not being asked to absorb a new doctrine. They were being asked to recall something they already knew.

A linguistic commentary says exactly this. Will you not notice it, and recall its falseness? For it is lodged in the mind of every clever person and every dull one alike. A modern concise commentary adds: if you had remembered, you would not have said this.

That is a hopeful way to see the human mind. The truth about Allah, that He needs no child, that He is One, is not hidden in a distant library. It is already tied round the finger. What is missing is a glance down at the thread.

Picture a woman standing in a supermarket aisle, trying to remember why she came in. She checks her phone, scans the shelves, gives up and heads for the tills. Then she sees the sticky note on the back of her own hand, in her own writing: 'Medicine for Mum'. She had known all along. She had simply not looked.

Many people's distance from Allah is like that. Not ignorance, but forgetfulness. Life's noise covers what the heart already holds.

The Quran's response is gentle. It does not shout new facts. It asks a two-word question that turns the eye back to the thread: will you not remember?
