As-Saffat 37:159

سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

“Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,”

Saheeh International

Essence

A claim about God is answered not with an argument but with a verdict: Allah is far above every description they pinned on Him.

A reflection

Four words in answer to a slander

Look at where this ayah sits. The claimants have just been quoted at their worst: God, they said, has kin among the jinna. The next ayah will finish the thought by excepting Allah's purified servants. But between the claim and that exception, the speech breaks off. A linguistic commentary calls it an interjection. Allah stops to clear Himself: subḥāna Allāhi ʿammā yaṣifūn. Glory be to Allah, far above what they describe.

Four words in the Arabic, and then the passage moves on. There is no wounded paragraph, no list of grievances, no demand for an apology. Another commentary says simply that this is Allah clearing Himself, from His own side, of a description unworthy of Him.

Now picture a man at his cousin's engagement party. Across the room he hears an uncle describe him to a stranger as the one who dropped out of university. He smiles through the evening. Then for a week he rehearses replies in the car. He drafts messages and deletes them. Part of him needs that description corrected, because part of his worth seems to hang on it.

That is the ego's position. We can be described, so we can be wounded by description. A wrong word about us feels like a small theft. Our pride needs defending.

Allah is not in that position. Nothing anyone says takes anything from Him. If you disbelieve, Allah is free of need of you (39:7).

So someone may ask: if He needs nothing, isn't it vain for Him to declare Himself above everyone's descriptions? Notice whom the sentence serves. It is not for Him. It is for the listener who heard the slander and might have half-believed it. It sets the record straight for us, because a false picture of God harms the one who holds it.

The humbling is ours. We need defending; He is simply described truly. And the calmest answer to a lie is not a louder voice. It is the truth, said once, by the One who needs nothing from it.
