As-Saffat 37:180

سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

“Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After every false description the surah has answered, it closes by clearing your Lord, Lord of all might, of everything they ascribed to Him.

A reflection

Hard ground no hoof can sink into

Al-ʿizza, might, comes from a root the first hearers felt underfoot. The classical lexicons describe ʿazāz as hard ground, where rain runs off fast and hooves cannot sink in. A poet called the eagle ʿazīza because she nests on the highest peaks, out of reach. A thing ʿazza when it grew so rare it could hardly be found. These usages are established. One commentator explains rabb al-ʿizza as the One whose might cannot be reached.

Now hear the whole ayah. Glory be to your Lord, Lord of all might, above what they describe. The idolaters had described Allah with daughters, kin and partners. They pressed their small pictures onto Him. The ayah says their descriptions were like hooves on ʿazāz. They could not sink in. They could not leave a mark.

Picture a public relations team in a glass office late at night. Their chief executive has been caught in a scandal. They draft and redraft a statement, choosing words to make him look humble, wise, wronged. Image is everything; the truth is negotiable. The ego of the powerful often needs exactly this: people to shape how it is seen.

Allah needs no such team. Nothing anyone says can enlarge or reduce Him. This is where our own ego shrinks. We are the ones who need our image managed, and He is the One whose reality no description can touch.

Someone may ask: isn't it vain for God to glorify Himself? An early commentator gives a striking answer. Allah glorifies Himself when a lie is spoken about Him. The tasbīḥ here is not self-promotion. It is the truth answering slander. And the One who speaks it needs nothing: people are the needy ones, and He is the Free of need, the Praised (35:15).

So when you say subḥān rabbiya, you are not adding to Him. You are stepping off the soft ground of your own descriptions onto the hard ground of what He is.
