As-Saffat 37:164

وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامٌ مَّعْلُومٌ

“[The angels say],[1310] "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.[1311]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Called Allah's daughters by the idolaters, the angels answer for themselves: each of us has a known station, and none steps beyond it.

A reflection

A sky that creaks with worship

The idolaters of Makkah had raised the angels to divine rank. They called them Allah's daughters and worshipped them. This ayah lets the angels answer, and their answer is a job description. There is none of us but has a known station.

The commentaries attach a remarkable narration to it. Al-Tirmidhi records the Prophet ﷺ saying: 'I see what you do not see and hear what you do not hear. The sky creaks, and it has every right to creak. In it there is not a space of four fingers without an angel's forehead laid there in prostration to Allah.' Al-Tirmidhi himself graded it ḥasan gharīb.

Picture the heavens like an old wooden floor under the weight of a full house. Every board taken. Every space filled with a forehead on the ground. And the beings who fill it, the ones the Makkans worshipped, are themselves bowing.

Now come down to an office building on a Monday. A senior manager arrives to find that the new layout has put his desk in the open-plan area, not the corner room he expected. He spends the morning sulking. He mentions it to three colleagues before lunch. His title is the same, his pay is the same. But his place feels smaller, and his ego cannot bear it.

The angels, by contrast, describe themselves by their place and are content with it. The highest creatures we can imagine define themselves as servants with a post. One commentator says they say it out of reverence for Allah, rejecting the worship given to them.

Someone may ask whether a God who fills His heavens with bowing angels needs to be worshipped. He answers it Himself. 'I do not want provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me' (51:57). People are the needy ones, and He is the Free of need (35:15). The creaking sky does not add to Him. It shows what is fitting for those who stand before Him.
