As-Saffat 37:34

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

“Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Five quiet words turn one scene into a law: this is how He deals with criminals, every time, whoever they are.

A reflection

No surname gets a quiet word

The chairman's son is stopped for speeding on a country road. He is polite and relaxed. He mentions his father's name and waits for the quiet word that has always followed. It does not come. He receives the same fine and the same points as anyone else. For the first time in his life, his name has made no difference.

This ayah steps back from the scene of blame and speaks in Allah's own voice. Innā kadhālika nafʿalu bi-l-mujrimīn: indeed, like this We deal with the criminals. The We is the plural of majesty. The verb is His own action, stated plainly and without emotion.

The commentaries draw out the weight of kadhālika, like this. As We have done with these, so We do with every criminal besides them, follower and followed alike. It is not a single verdict. It is a standing way.

That should land hard on the ego. Every human being secretly hopes to be the exception. My background, my intentions, my good deeds elsewhere, my family name. The ayah removes the category of exception entirely. Before Him, nobody's surname gets a quiet word.

A sceptic might hear arrogance in such a statement: a God announcing how He deals with people. But consider the alternative. A ruler who announced no rule, and decided each case by mood or favour, would be the real tyrant. Declaring the pattern in advance is the opposite of arrogance. It is fairness made public.

And He gains nothing by it. He is free of all need (35:15). The law is announced for us, so that nobody can say on that Day that they did not know how it worked.
