Al-Mursalat 77:18
كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
“Thus do We deal with the criminals.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Thus We deal fairly with the guilty: not a punishment invented against them from outside, but the harvest of exactly what their own hands had already gathered.
A reflection
A harvest, not a sentence handed down
Jurm, crime, shares its root with jiram, the date harvest, the moment clusters are cut from the palm and gathered in. The lexicons explain the connection directly: earning of any kind, good or bad, is pictured as a cutting and a gathering, as though every choice a person makes is a stroke of the blade deciding what will later fill their own basket. A crime, on this image, is not something that happens to a person from outside. It is something a person deliberately cuts for themselves, stroke by stroke, and then carries home, fully their own, in their own two hands, with no one else having done the cutting for them.
That changes what "thus We deal with the guilty" is actually describing. It is tempting to read divine punishment as an external verdict imposed onto a situation from above, a sentence handed down the way a judge hands down a sentence unconnected to the convicted person's own daily labour. This root suggests something closer to a harvest arriving on schedule: the guilty are not dealt a fate invented specially for them. They are given exactly what their own hands, over years of choices, had already been gathering all along, cluster by cluster, cut by cut.
That reframing matters considerably for how this ayah should actually land on a reader today. It is not primarily, or even mainly, a threat aimed outward at other people long dead, far away, and safely different from ourselves. It is a plain description of how consequence genuinely works, for absolutely anyone, the reader very much included: what you spend your actual days cutting and gathering, in honesty or in quiet dishonesty, in real generosity or in nursed cruelty, is also, eventually and without exception, exactly what arrives, fully ripened, at your own door.
