As-Saffat 37:42

فَوَٰكِهُ ۖ وَهُم مُّكْرَمُونَ

“Fruits;[1291] and they will be honored”

Saheeh International

Essence

Two gifts in one breath: food eaten for nothing but delight, and the honour that every human heart has always wanted more than food.

A reflection

Nothing eaten out of need

A warehouse picker has a fifteen-minute break. He eats a sandwich in four bites, standing by the vending machine, checking the clock. He does not taste it. It is fuel, swallowed so that his body can get through the next four hours. Most of his meals this week have been like that.

The ayah names the provision of the sincere in one word: fawākih, fruits. The commentaries explain why that word was chosen. Fruit, one says, is what is eaten for pleasure, not as staple food to preserve health. The people of Paradise have no need to preserve their health, because their bodies are made for eternity. So everything they eat, they eat for delight. Another commentary adds: even meat, in that sense, is fruit there.

That is a quiet revolution in how eating works. In this life, almost all food carries the shadow of need. We eat because we must, often quickly, often without noticing. Even our pleasures at the table are mixed with hunger, worry about health and the knowledge that we will be hungry again.

The ayah describes the end of that shadow. No bite will be taken out of necessity. No meal will be swallowed standing up. Eating becomes entirely a gift, received for its own sake.

We cannot live like that yet. But we can practise a small version of it. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah is pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it. One way to do that is simply to notice. Sit down, even for five minutes. Taste one thing properly. Thank the One who made it.

The picker's sandwich is still a gift. It is just a gift he has not had time to open.
