As-Saffat 37:43
فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
“In gardens of pleasure”
Saheeh International
Essence
Three words answer the whole scene before them: instead of being herded, halted and set against each other, they live in gardens of bliss.
A reflection
The scene in the mirror
This ayah is three words long, but it sits inside one of the most carefully built passages in the Quran. Read the twenty-odd ayat around it as two halves of a single picture. Almost every detail of the first half has a reflection in the second.
In the first half, the wrongdoers are gathered and herded along the path of the blaze (37:22-23). In the second, the sincere are placed in gardens (37:43), and a cup is brought round to them (37:45). One group is moved by force. The other stays still while good things come to it.
In the first half, the crowd is halted: stop them, they are to be questioned (37:24). In the second, the sincere are seated on couches (37:44). One group stands to be interrogated. The other reclines at ease.
In the first half, they turn to one another to accuse (37:27). In the second, they face one another in friendship (37:44), and later turn to one another to talk (37:50). The same root, q-b-l, carries both.
In the first half, they are told they will taste the painful punishment (37:38). In the second, they drink from a cup that is pure delight to those who drink (37:46).
And the preposition is the same: fī. Those are in the punishment, sharing it (37:33). These are in gardens of bliss.
Why build it like a mirror? Perhaps so that no reader can choose one half without seeing what the other half would have been. Every line of the Fire scene silently asks: is this what you want? And every line of the Garden answers: this could have been yours instead.
