Sad 38:46

إِنَّآ أَخْلَصْنَـٰهُم بِخَالِصَةٍ ذِكْرَى ٱلدَّارِ

“Indeed, We chose them for an exclusive quality: remembrance of the home [of the Hereafter].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah Himself refined these prophets with one unmixed quality, and then named it: a heart that kept the true Home in mind.

A reflection

Refined by Him, not self-made

Innā akhlaṣnāhum: We, indeed, purified them. Look at who does the verb. Not Ibrāhīm, Isḥāq and Yaʿqūb. Allah says that He refined them.

The first hearers knew the root from two crafts. Gold and silver that the fire had cleared of dross were called khilāṣ. Butter was cooked in a pot with dates or barley until the dregs clung to them and sank. The clear fat that rose was the khulāṣa. Ikhlāṣ, in this picture, is not a warm feeling of meaning well. It is a process: heat, separation, and what remains when everything mixed in has gone.

The same Arabic form can be read two ways elsewhere. Mukhliṣ, active, is the one who makes his worship pure for Allah. Mukhlaṣ, passive, is the one whom Allah has made pure. Yūsuf is called one of 'Our purified servants' (12:24). This ayah leaves no doubt which reading fits. The heat was His.

That is a quiet blow to the ego. Sincerity is the virtue we are most tempted to take credit for. Picture a woman who has led a study circle on sincerity for a whole year. At the end-of-year dinner the organiser thanks the caterer first, then her. She smiles, and drives home hurt. The year's topic has just been tested, and she noticed that she minded.

Someone might ask whether it is boastful for Allah to say 'We purified them', taking the credit for the prophets' best quality. The 'We' is the plural of majesty, the way a king speaks of his own acts. And Allah gains nothing from the credit. 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need, the Praised' (35:15). A creature who claims credit wants something from the claim. Allah claims it so that His servants do not. It is mercy dressed as authority.

One commentator gives both sides. They were purified because they held this quality, and they held it because He granted it and gently helped them choose it. Your effort is real. So is His gift, underneath it. The humble response is to keep trying, and to thank Him for the trying.
