Sad 38:71
إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن طِينٍ
“[So mention] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Before the first human existed, Allah named him to the angels by his skin and his clay: the plainest material, announced in the highest assembly.
A reflection
Announced in heaven, made of mud
On a shelf in a chief executive's office sit three glass awards and one lumpy clay handprint. His daughter pressed it at nursery twenty years ago. Visitors admire the awards. Few notice that the handprint is the truer portrait of the man.
Innī khāliqun basharan min ṭīn: I am creating a human being from clay. The speaker is the One who alone creates. The audience is the highest assembly of His creation. And the material He names in front of them is the humblest there is. The lexicons define ṭīn as earth mixed with water.
One classical commentator raises a sharp question about the wording. Saying 'I am making a bracelet of gold' only makes sense if it could have been made of silver. So humanity could have been made from something else. He chose clay. Nothing finer was lacking to Him.
This is the ego's first lesson, and it was given before the first ego existed. Everything we are proud of rests on wet earth. The surgeon's hands, the scholar's memory, the athlete's speed, the heir's surname: clay, shaped and lent life. Pride is clay forgetting what it is. A few ayat later Iblīs will argue that fire is better than clay (38:76). He mistook the material for the worth.
Someone may ask whether there is vanity in a Creator announcing His work to an audience. Among us, an announcement usually seeks applause. But the One speaking here is free of all need (35:15). The angels' praise adds nothing to Him and their silence would take nothing away. The announcement serves the listeners. The angels learn what is coming, and what they will be asked to do. We learn where we came from, and so what we are not.
The handprint belongs on the shelf beside the awards. It tells the truth the awards leave out, and the highest assembly in creation heard that truth first.
